Welcome to our "Why I Love MR" Q&A Series! We have talked with both internal AMC Staff and some of our clients, so keep an eye out for fun interviews coming up exploring all the reasons why those of us who work in market research are so passionate about what we do! Interested in being interviewed and sharing why YOU love MR? Reach out to us.
Here we get a chance to know Rachel Lenz, Project Director at AMC Global, a little bit better...
A lot of little kids want to be astronauts, firefighters, or doctors when they grow up. Few five year olds would tell you, “When I get older, I want to be a market researcher!” How did you first get involved in market research, and what drew you to it?
RACHEL: I really enjoy learning so going back to school for a masters or MBA was always something I thought I would pursue. When Covid hit in 2020, I started looking into programs and came across the Master of Science in Market Research program at Michigan State University. The curriculum reminded me of a couple of my favorite courses from undergrad (market research and consumer insights) and after talking with a few people who had completed the program and were now working in the field, I knew it was the right path for me!
What has surprised you most about working in market research and insights?
RACHEL: Just how impactful the work we do is for people and companies. Once you know market research exists, making any important business decision without it just doesn’t seem right.
Market research studies come in all shapes and sizes, from quick claims and message tests, to large and complex conjoint analysis, to getting your feet on the ground with in-depth qualitative interviews. What’s your favorite methodology or research approach?
RACHEL: I looooove quantitative surveys. Crafting thoughtful questionnaires to gather impactful insights and then analyzing the results is something I really enjoy.
What would you tell someone who is considering a career in market research?
RACHEL: Use LinkedIn to reach out to professionals in the field! I received some of the best career advice from people I met with one time over a Zoom call. You will be surprised how many MR professionals are willing and eager to share their experience with you. If there is an industry or role that you are interested in, search for it on LinkedIn and connect with someone who is doing what you want to do!
Thank you, Rachel!
